Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Hailey who loved reading. She had read many books and gained a wealth of knowledge. Though she was very smart, Hailey often felt she wasn’t pretty enough.
One day, Hailey wandered into the dark forest near her village. There, she encountered a witch with a crooked nose and wild, tangled hair.
“Do you want to be the most beautiful girl in the world?” the witch asked slyly. “I can make you look like a princess, but you’ll have to trade your knowledge for it.”
Hailey imagined herself with shimmering golden hair, smooth, flawless skin, her freckles gone, and her eyes as bright as sapphire lakes. She would look just like a fairy tale princess.
Even though she loved her knowledge, Hailey also longed to be admired by the other kids. After much thought, she agreed to the witch’s deal.
With a wave of her hands, the witch cast a spell. Hailey gasped as she felt herself transform. Her hair turned golden, her freckles disappeared, her eyes became dazzling blue—she was stunning!
At first, Hailey was thrilled. The kids who once teased her now marveled at her beauty. She enjoyed their admiration and felt like she was living in a dream.
But as days passed, Hailey began to realize something was wrong. Her mind felt empty. The stories she once loved and the knowledge she had cherished were gone.
Hailey struggled with her schoolwork. Simple math problems that she used to solve effortlessly now left her confused. During a math test, she broke down in tears when she couldn’t answer even the easiest question.
She lost her passion for reading. Her favorite books, once her treasures, now felt meaningless. Her room, filled with stacks of beloved books, became a reminder of what she had lost.
Hailey also missed inventing. She had been the village’s little inventor, creating clever gadgets from scraps. Without her knowledge, she could no longer make anything, and the joy of invention vanished.
Hailey regretted her decision deeply. She resolved to find the witch and reclaim her knowledge.
With determination, she ventured back into the dark forest. The trees seemed alive, their branches twisting to block her path. Sharp thorns tore at her dress, and an owl swooped down, its wings battering her face.
But Hailey pressed on. Gathering all her courage, she pushed through the forest and finally reached the witch’s tiny cottage.
“Witch!” she cried, pounding on the creaky wooden door. “Please give me back my knowledge! I want to be my smart self again!”
The door creaked open, and the witch appeared, squinting her small eyes and cackling.
“Your knowledge? But we made a deal—you wanted beauty more than wisdom, and that’s what you got,” the witch sneered. She waved her hands, creating a swirl of smoky purple magic.
Hailey coughed and waved away the smoke. “I know I made a mistake. Beauty isn’t as important as wisdom. I want to be smart again, not just pretty.”
The witch refused, casting spell after spell to stop Hailey. Slippery banana peels appeared on the floor. Writhing vines wrapped around Hailey’s ankles. The witch’s pet crow transformed into a shrieking little monster that darted at Hailey’s head.
But Hailey didn’t give up. Dodging every trap, she made her way toward the witch’s magical bookshelf, where she believed her knowledge was stored.
A few spells hit Hailey, and she got a cut on her forehead, but her determination never wavered. She pushed forward, overcoming every obstacle.
Finally, she leaped toward the tall bookshelf, knocking it over with a crash. Hundreds of dusty books tumbled to the floor like thunder. Among them, Hailey spotted her own book of knowledge.
Clutching the book tightly, she felt a warm, glowing light spread through her mind.
“No! You’ve taken back your knowledge!” the witch howled in frustration.
Hailey stood proudly, hugging the book close. She might not be the most beautiful girl anymore, but she understood that true beauty came from confidence and courage.
Hailey chose to embrace her true self, determined to keep learning from books and use her knowledge to make a difference.
And so, Hailey walked out of the forest, wiser and braver than ever.
